WOMEN IN THE ASYLUM SYSTEM: BRIDGEING THE PROTECTION GAP
Join us for the Yorkshire and Humber regional conference in Sheffield aimed at addressing the Protection Gap that Women and girls who have fled the world’s most brutal wars and repressive countries fall through in the UK asylum system.
The Protection Gap is gendered in that it presents barriers and challenges to many women who seek asylum in ways which are not normally a factor for men. There are five specific barriers which can affect women’s asylum claims in different, and adverse ways.
- Female interviewer & interpreter
- Trained interviewer & interpreter
- Counselling (Menatl Health)
Refugee women will be joined by mental health practitioners, solicitors, politicians, activists and supporters to discuss a progressive way forward in the region

Istanbul Convention Parliamentary Lobby
On 13th July 2016 we will be hosting a Parliamentary lobby on the Istanbul Convention for MPs and peers from 12.30 – 2pm in Committee Room 7.
The event has cross-party support, co-hosted by MPs Gavin Newlands, Maria Miller, Jess Phillips, and Tom Brake. It is organised by the IC Change campaign in partnership with Women’s Aid, Scottish Women’s Aid, the End Violence Against Women Coalition (EVAW), Southall Black Sisters, FORWARD, and White Ribbon.
The Istanbul Convention Parliamentary lobby is a drop in event for MPs and peers to find out more about the Istanbul Convention and have a photo taken of them showing their support. We have also arranged for some survivors of gender-based violence, along with prominent advocates in this area to attend so that you can talk to them about why they want the Istanbul Convention to be ratified by the UK Government.
